Position summary: Responsible for performing various duties to support the Underwriting Department; coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments; complying with operating policies and procedures established for this position. Reporting pertinent information to the immediate supervisor; responding to inquiries or requests for information.

Qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or related field; or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, etc.)
  • High degree of attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • 3-5 years current, demonstrated experience as a FHA mortgage underwriter
  • DE Certification a must
  • Ability to research, read and correctly apply agency and company guidelines
  • Understand how Conventional, Rural Housing, FHA and/or VA guidelines relate to internal and investor guidelines required
  • LAPP certification preferred
  • Experience in Underwriting USDA/ Rural Housing loans preferred
  • Strong understanding of manual underwriting guidelines.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  • Reviews and evaluates information on mortgage loan documentation to determine if borrower and/or property meet loan standards
  • Completes a thorough analysis of loan files to determine compliance with company, investor, and government guidelines and standards
  • Evaluates the entire credit package and collateral for residential mortgage loans and ultimately ensure an “investor’ quality loan product
  • Meets or exceed established production goals and quality standards
  • Provides superior customer service to internal and external customers
  • Be available to processors and loan officers for general guideline interpretations and questions on specific loan files
  • Continually exhibit an understanding of automated underwriting and guidelines
  • Checks accuracy of all calculations
  • Communicates decision (approval, suspense, denial) on loans to appropriate parties both verbally and in writing

  • Coordinates specific work tasks with other employees within the department as well as with other departments in order to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information

  • Communicates with management and coworkers in order to integrate goals and activities
  • Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the Bank’s compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.
