Director, Institutional Giving, Institutional Advancement

Under the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Director of Institutional Giving provides strategic and operational leadership for the University's corporation, foundation, and government fundraising program, in support of the institution's strategic priorities. The Director of Institutional Giving will:

On average, the Institutional Giving department has historically solicited at least $10 million per year, and raised over $6 million each year, of which $750,000 is unrestricted funding. The department ensures compliance with grant guidelines and effective stewardship, in order to ensure future fundraising success.

Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles). Hybrid position, and upon review by Supervisor.

Annual Salary Rate Range: $108,247.14 - $117,000.00

Monthly Salary Rate Range: $9,020.595 - $9,750.00

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Strategic leadership
  • Develops and executes a comprehensive fundraising strategy to increase financial support from foundation, government, and corporate donors/prospects.
  • Serves as an integral member of the leadership team for the Division of Institutional Advancement.
  • Works with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to create and execute a strategy to engage current and prospective donors in her portfolio.
  • Remains knowledgeable about current events, trends, and news that may impact institutional support of higher education and the nonprofit sector; seek opportunities for the intersection of public, private, and nonprofit partnerships that could benefit the University.
  • Participates actively in the life of the University, including operational processes and initiatives, by serving on or leading University committees, workgroups, task forces, and councils as assigned.

2. Operational leadership
  • Sets an annual calendar of grant development activities, proposals and communications/engagement activities designed to support the accomplishment of the University's annual priorities.
  • Maintains strong, proactive relationships with Accounting, Finance and Administration, Financial Aid, Human Resources, Payroll, and funding agencies to ensure full grant compliance and process efficiency
  • Creates, designs, and implements processes, procedures, and materials related to proposal development, grant operations, and grant management
  • Oversees/implements a grant/gift acceptance process that includes donor acknowledgement, funding notification, and fund creation
  • Works with the Advancement Services department to maintain and administer all institutional donor records in the Raiser's Edge fundraising database
  • Supervise Associate Director of Institutional Giving

3. Identify funding opportunities
  • Works closely with the President, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Provost, and other key administrators, staff, and faculty members to identify needs and new funding opportunities
  • Conducts proactive and responsive donor research and prospecting to identify and qualify new prospects
  • Cultivates relationships with current and prospective institutional donors through a variety of engagement activities and communications
  • Serves as a key advisor to Cabinet on strategic matters related to grant opportunities, grant development and management, and other related administrative concerns
  • Collaborates with Individual Giving to maximize case statements, proposals, and cross-prospect relationships

4. Develop proposals
  • Provides strategic leadership, planning, coordination and technical assistance in the development, writing, program design, budget development, and submission of proposals.
  • Selects, plans, directs, reviews and critiques the work of external (contractual) grant writers developing proposals for the University.
  • Coordinates the logistics for donor site visits; staff donor visits; prepare visit research briefing materials and talking points for faculty and leadership

5. Manage grants
  • Manages a portfolio of 60+ prospective and active donors.
  • Assists grant/project managers, staff, and faculty in grant implementation to include instruction on internal procedures and funding agency compliance, assistance with all issues of financial, personnel, payroll, purchasing and administration of funded awards, and instruction on cost-sharing documentation.
  • Collaborates with Marketing and Communications to develop and communications strategies for corporate, foundation, and government-related content.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Occasional evening and weekend work to support special events
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:
Knowledge:
  • Key fundraising concepts and strategies (includes identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship)
  • Knowledge of the grants development process, including prospect research, proposal and budget development, solicitation, and award management
  • Expert grant writing and other development communications skills
  • Knowledge of institutional funding sources, which include foundations, corporations, and government funding agencies
  • Experience with academic programs and learning support systems within higher education and the Catholic community
  • Experience with pre-award sponsored research functions for government grants
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Ability to use office technology such as computers and software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office suite and various online funder and government grant management systems

  • Ability to interact and develop relationships with a diverse population of prospects that have varied interests and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated success in expert grant writing, proposal development, budget development, and grants administration

  • Strong record of managing multiple projects and tasks in a deadline driven environment
  • Proven ability to grasp complex subjects, meet deadlines, and build professional relationships
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and lead diverse teams of internal and external stakeholders
  • Successful performance working individually and as part of a team

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, or related field from an accredited college or university is required (advanced degree is highly preferred)
  • Additional certificates in fundraising or grant writing are desirable

Experience:
  • Ten years' experience in development, grant writing, and institutional fundraising strongly preferred, particularly within a higher education setting
  • Extensive experience in pursuing funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources is also required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience with managing staff and contractors preferred

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid and current California driver's license is required
