Position Summary
The
Department of Radiology at the University of New Mexico is seeking an experienced
Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or Associate RSO (ARSO) with broad scope license experience to join our faculty as RSO.
Under the direction of the UNM Health Sciences Center Vice Chancellor for Research, the successful candidate acts as the principal technical resource and is delegated authority to manage the
radiation safety program at the University of New Mexico (UNM), which includes an expanding clinical mission in the School of Medicine. The clinical mission includes New Mexico's only level 1 trauma center, NIH-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center with a state-of-the-art radiation therapy facility, rapidly growing nuclear medicine and theranostics program, and a thriving Radiology department with advanced interventional capabilities. UNM is an R1 research institution with collaborations with world-renowned agencies such as Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. New Mexico has a rich history with radiation sciences and research, and this position provides a wonderful opportunity for professional development and enrichment.
The RSO develops, plans, coordinates, and manages all aspects of the radiation safety program for a
Type A Broad Scope license with numerous clinical and research activities, and ensures safety of University employees, students, visitors, and patients. The RSO serves as the primary contact for the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and ensures program compliance with all University, state, and federal regulations. The RSO is a member of and works closely with the UNM Radiation Control Committee (RCC) and executive management to implement the program.
This position will have a
primary faculty appointment in Radiology with protected academic time to conduct research and/or to teach in the Medical Physics Graduate Program, Health Physics training pipeline, or to various learners such as residents, fellows, and medical, radiologic sciences and nuclear engineering students. This position will have a flexible work schedule, but the applicant must live in New Mexico.
The
salary range for this position is $175,000.00 to $222,000.00 , depending on the applicant's rank, experience and academic background.
Duties and Responsibilities - Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the radiation safety program, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
- Interprets new and existing regulations, advises leadership on technical and regulatory issues regarding the strategic direction of the radiation safety program applies strategic measures as appropriate.
- Manages programs of critical importance; works with leadership, individual principal investigators, and the radiation safety staff in the development and implementation of new proposals as well as the coordination and administration of existing projects within the radiation safety program.
- Oversees the review of radiation human-use clinical research protocols to ensure proper disclosure of radiation exposure and ensure compliance with UNM policies and local, state and federal regulations.
- Prepares reports and other forms of scientific or technical nature, including publishing and revising the Campus Radiation Safety Manual and Unit SOP's as appropriate and performs an annual audit of the Radiation Safety Program.
- Responds to radiation safety emergencies and prepares and submits required reports.
- Oversees the use of radioactive materials at UNM facilities through the management of radioactive materials licensing, radiation laboratory survey, and radioactive waste management programs. Reviews and approves requests for radiation permits.
- Manages the radiation safety training program to ensure that only authorized, qualified individuals work with radiation; manages the personnel dosimetry program to limit radiation exposure to radiation users and ensure compliance with UNM policies and regulatory exposure limits.
- Supervises personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
- May propose and create new programs in radiation safety including research of regulations, process development, development of SOPs and implementation.
- Participates in the development and management of annual operating budgets for the operating unit; prioritizes and tracks operating unit expenditures.
- Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient operation of the program/project.
- Participates in development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.
- Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
- Leads educational and training initiatives in health physics and radiation safety.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - MS degree in Health or Medical Physics or related technical field, and
- 2 years of experience as an RSO or ARSO on a broad scope license, and
- Must meet all NRC training and experience requirements for RSO as indicated in NUREG 1556 volume 9 and volume 11, for medical facilities (10 CFR part 35.100, 200, 300, 400, 600 and 1000) and broad scope academic/research facilities, respectively.
Preferred Qualifications - PhD in Health or Medical Physics or related technical field.
- Board certified by NRC-recognized specialty board.
- 5 years of experience as an RSO or ARSO on a broad scope license.
- Experience teaching health physics, radiation safety, or related topics to various learners.
