Responsibilities:
  • Respond to referrals for assessment.
  • Teach pupils the skills and subject matter commensurate with their intellectual, physical, and emotional needs, as determined by assessment and utilizing State/Board adopted curriculum.
  • Provide an appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce appropriate pupil behavior, attitudes, and social skills.
  • Assess pupils to determine their functional and cognitive levels.
  • Develop and implement appropriate standards-based IEP goals and objectives.
  • Maintain a variety of pupil records, including attendance, report cards, progress reports, and transcripts.
  • Confer frequently with professional staff, parents, and pupils relative to the educational process and pupil progress.
  • Participate in professional development activities and implement strategies as appropriate to meet pupil needs.
  • Travel between school sites and accommodate flexible scheduling demands.
  • Maintain confidential files and each student's confidentiality.
  • Assist general and special education teachers to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing pupils in the classroom.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of behavior management systems.
  • Current educational trends, core and alternate core curriculum, and strategies for implementation as related to programs for hearing impaired pupils.
  • State content standards is desired.
  • Familiarity with mandated tests (i.e., CAT-6, CAPA, CAHSEE, CELDT) is desired.
  • Knowledge of IEP process is desired.
  • Knowledge of hearing aids and assistive listening devices.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and alternative communication systems.
  • Instructional strategies to enable hearing impaired and deaf pupils.
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility to establish appropriate schedules for students and self.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, parents, and pupils.
  • Competence in American Sign Language.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other disciplines for the success of the pupil.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Possession of or qualification for a valid California Credential in Special Education, authorizing instruction for the Hearing Impaired.
  • Demonstrated communicative skills in American Sign Language.
  • Successful teaching experience, or successful remedial teaching experience, or student teaching or internship in a program for pupils with a hearing impairment.
